Derry welcome for Euro 2012 Loughlinisland tribute

Sinn Féin’s Colly Kelly has welcomed the announcement that UEFA has agreed to the FAI request for the Irish soccer team to wear black armbands when they take on Italy in the Euro 2012 game on June 18.

The game takes place 18 years to the day when loyalist gunmen killed six customers in the Heights Bar in Loughlinisland as they watched the Ireland v Italy World Cup game in 1994.

Councillor Kelly said:“This gesture by the FAI, following a request from the families is to be applauded. The families are still seeking truth and justice for their loved ones and with the game being on the same date and against the same opposition, it will be a difficult time for them.

“Our thoughts are with the families at this time as they not only mark the anniversary of the deaths of their loved ones but also continue in their search for truth and justice.”

Derry men Darron Gibson and James McClean have both been named in Ireland’s squad for the tournament.
