Derry man headbutted doorman
A Derry man has pleaded guilty to an 'unprovoked and disgraceful' assault at a hearing in the city's Magistrates Court.
Thomas Toner (47) of Glencaw Park admitted assaulting a door man in Brunswick Superbowl on December 17, last year.
The court heard that police were called to the bowling alley to help with the removal of five men. Toner became aggressive with staff and Toner headbutted a doorman.He was arrested although he was unfit for interview that night and was asked to return to the police station at a later date.
The 47-year-old told police he could “remember his actions up to a point but the actual assault was a blur.”
Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said it was a “family occasion which went unfortunately wrong and is memorable for the all the wrong reasons.” He added Toner thought “he had left this sort of behaviour behind him.”
Adjourning sentencing for a probation pre-sentence report, District Judge Barney McElholm said it was a “totally unprovoked assault and disgraceful.”
Toner was released on continuing bail to appear in court on August 10.
