Both Derry and Buncrana are in shock following the shooting dead of a man at a housing estate outside the Inishowen town at approximately 9.30 last night. The man, named locally as Andrew ‘Chubby’ Allen, believed to be originally from the Top of the Hill area of Derry, was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later.

Garda technical experts were at the scene last night and it is understood the services of the State Pathologist’s Office have been requested.

According to the Garda Press office, a second scene has also been preserved at Fahan, where a car was found burned out shortly after the shooting.

An incident room has been set up at Buncrana Garda Station.

Responding to the news, local TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said the community in Buncrana is “shocked and horrified that a man has been shot in our town tonight.”

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this extremely difficult time.”

Deputy MacLochlainn also appealed to anyone with any information to come forward.

“Anyone who was in the Lisfannon area tonight and may have any information – no matter how small it may seem – should come forward and contact the Gardaí immediately.”

The shooting took place at Links View, a quiet cul-de-sac estate just off the main Derry to Buncrana Road opposite the North West Golf Club.

Local gardai were on the scene quickly and sealed off the area.

The investigation was being led by Superintendent. Kevin English of Buncrana.

At the scene a number of children could be seen coming and going from a house near where the shooting occurred. A garda officer speaking on behalf of Supt English said they were investigating a “serious shooting incident in which a man had sustained serious injuries”.

She refused to give any other details.
