Derry’s Walled City is the place to be for the European Heritage Open Days taking place this weekend.

Adding value to the many historic buildings which will be opening for free, the Holywell Trust has arranged some special activities.

Professor Alistair Rowan, Irish architectural historian and author of “The Buildings of Ireland - North West Ulster” will conduct walking tours on Sunday afternoon unpacking the richness of Derry’s architectural heritage and discussing some of the “gems” that have been lost since the 1980s.

Dr Brian Scott, archaeologist and author of “The Great Guns that Thunder”, will lead tours focusing on the design and arming of Derry’s Walls as an instrument of war.

Tours - at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. - are free but tickets must be booked in advance from The Playhouse Theatre Booking Office on Tel: 71268027. Both sets of tours will depart from The Playhouse Stage Door on Artillery Street. Free refreshments will be available after each tour to allow for informal discussion and debate.

Meanwhile, Foyle Camera Club will host a workshop on photo composition starting at 11am on Sunday morning in Cafe Bloom’s at the Verbal Arts Centre.

The workshop is designed to help people entering the ‘Walls 400!’ Amateur Photographic Competition, the theme of which is ‘Derry’s Historic City Walls - a monument of national significance’. Volunteers from the club will be on hand to go out onto the Walls and assist with basic photographic techniques. This workshop is free and there is no need to book; just turn up at Bloom’s Cafe at 11am on Sunday morning.

Living history specialists will provide a demonstration of the firing of a cannon on the hour from 2pm until 5pm at Shipquay Gate.
