Dog owners to be given 'poop scoops'

Dog owners in Derry could soon be given free 'poop scoops' when they walk their dogs on Lisfannon beach.

The initiative is part of a pilot scheme launched by Donegal County Council in an effort to clean up local beaches.

Lisfannon beach is very popular with Derry dog owners with dozens making the short trip every day to walk their dogs.

As well as making the beach look untidy, dog faeces also pose a potential health risk and can cause blindness in children.

Buncrana Sinn Fin councillor Padraig MacLochlainn says the move has been prompted in part by an incident in Derry several years ago.

“It’s a serious issue. We had a child in Derry City, for example, a few years back who lost the sight in one eye because of dog poo. While it appears to be quite a trivial matter, it is quite serious,” he said.

The ‘poop scoops’ will be handed out free of charge to visitors at the beach.
