Donegal - Joint top for Blue Flags
Buncrana County Councillor Rena Donaghey has welcomed the news Downings beach has been awarded Blue Flag Status as it now means Donegal has equally as many Blue Flags as any other county in Ireland.
She says Kerry always had the most, and marketed their county on that premise, and now Donegal should do the same.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday she said: “I have often emphasised the importance of any county to have as many beaches with Blue Flag Status as possible. It demonstrates how clean water are and how well the beaches are kept.”
Colr Donaghey says if Buncrana’s Ladies Bay was awarded the prestigious award they could say they have the most Blue Flags in the country.
“There are so many visitors who search the internet to holiday close to areas which have this status. I have been trying to secure a Blue Flag for the Ladies Bay in Buncrana which recently was awarded Green Coast Award and if we were to secure this we would be the county in Ireland with the most Blue Flags.”
In total 13 Blue Flag and seven Green Coast Awards have been awarded to the county this, news which the Buncrana woman certainly welcomes.
