Donegal man dies in freak Australian accident
A 25 years old County Donegal man has died in a freak accident while working in Brisbane, Australia on Tuesday evening.
Named locally as Rory McMenamin from Newtowncunningham, he suffered serious injuries when he was crushed by a truck while changing a tyre at a tyre depot where he worked.
The dead man was a graduate in accountancy from Dundee University and had travelled to Australia earlier this year to spend a year out there with friends from his home area.
He was taken to a nearby hospital following the accident but had suffered serious head and internal injuries and died a short time later.
The family once owned a tyre depot in Co. Donegal and Rory worked there during school holidays and also after the family sold the business. Locals described him as being very skilled at this type of work.
His distraught parents Liam and Rella were holidaying in the west of Ireland when the news broke about the tragedy. He is also survived by three older sisters and one younger brother.
One local in Newtowncunningham said last night that the community is devastated:
"Rory was a very well liked young man. He was hard working and had a very good personality. It is a terrible tragedy for the family."
No arrangements have yet been finalised for bringing his body home to Donegal.
