Donegal TD to boycott property tax
A Donegal TD opposed to the property tax has said he will continue to boycott the tax despite the threat that TD’S who do not pay it face the risk of not being able to take their seats if re-elected.
Donegal South West representative Thomas Pringle said he was aware of the possible consequences of his decision.
His comments came as people in Donegal were able to find how much their home is valued at under the new property tax.
The Revenue’s online guide which indicates the value properties are valued at in over 3,000 electoral districts around the country.
Most of the county is now covered by two bands which categorising properties as being worth up to 100,00 euro and between 100,000 euro and 150,000 euro. Each electoral division contains between 500 and 1,000 properties. Letters from the Revenue about the tax will be sent to homes in Donegal in the coming weeks.
If TDs don’t file a property return by the next election they will be in contravention of the Standards in Public Office Act which would lead to an investigation by the Standards in Public Office Commission which has the power to suspend their Dail membership,
Deputy Pringle said he will continue to boycott the tax and urged people to campaign against it.
“We always recognised that when the property tax legislation was published in December that a boycott of the tax on its own will not defeat it,” he said.
Fianna Fáil Donegal North East TD Deputy Charlie McConalogue reiterated his strong opposition to property tax plans saying families in mortgage difficulty simply cannot afford to pay hundreds of euro in extra taxes on their home. “I strongly believe that it is wrong to tax the family home,” he said.
