Donnelly still on hunger strike
Leading Derry dissident republican Gary Donnelly will today begin his seventh day on hunger strike in Maghaberry prison.
The prominent member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM) began his protest fast last Friday after he was removed from the republican landing in the jail because of an apparent death threat against him from the Real IRA, a claim which has ben denied by republican sources. Donnelly has insisted he will continue his hunger strike until he is returned to the republican wing.
Speaking to the 'Journal' His father, Roy Donnelly, said; "I was speaking to Gary on Thursday and he said he is feeling light headed. He has not taken any food since 6pm last Friday and he has lost 14 lbs.
"He also said he has been strip searched on a number of occasions which is ludicrous considering that he has been held in isolation since he began refusing food," he said.
'Worried'
Mr Donnelly admitted his family are "worried" about his son's health.
"Gary has asked to be moved back to the republican wing but has been told it could take two weeks until he has an answer so we could have another two weeks of this at least," he said.
Earlier this week, the 32CSM staged a protest at Free Derry Corner calling for the Derry republican to be moved to the republican landing.
Commenting on the hunger strike, the spokesperson said; "This development marks a deliberate intrusion of this dirty war strategy into the prison system. Like all previous attempts to do so it will fail in the face of determined republican resistance both within and without of that system."
A rally is support of the Derry republican will be held outside Maghaberry prison on Sunday at noon.
