Dungiven police station shuts doors to the public
Dungiven police station is now officially closed to the public, the ‘Journal’ can reveal.
The station, which in recent months was open for just a handful hours every other Tuesday, is now shut.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed: “Dungiven station is closed to members of the public, but is still used by officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team every other Tuesday.
“Police surgeries are also carried out at locations in the town.”
The station, which had been earmarked for closure under a review of the police estate, is also being considered by Limavady Borough Council as possibly part of a community and sports development project for the town.
The Council has made an expression of interest to acquire the now -closed station.
In his monthly report to councillors last Tuesday, Limavady Council’s Chief Executive Liam Flanigan said: “Chief Inspector Sam Donaldson of the PSNI has written to Council regarding the closure of the station which is currently being cleared of all furnishings etc.
“The Chief Inspector is seeking local opinion through the Council on whether or not to recommnend that the station be demolished first, before possible disposal, which could take up to 12 months or more to complete, or to dispose of the property as is, in which case disposal could be completed May/June 2013.”
Councillors agreed it was best to get a costing for acquiring the site, with the station demolished, and a costing to buy as is.
Police, meantime, have held community surgeries in Dungiven, including in the library.
