Emergency services attacked in Derry
Emergency services have come under attack in Derry on two separate occasions over the weekend.
Police and the Fire Service were attacked by stone throwers as they attended an arson attack at a electricity sub station at the Daisyfield at around 9pm on Friday night.
Up to 3000 homes were left without power.
A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Electricity confirmed that thousands of customers were left without electricity but explained that the supply was restored fully in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“Three thousand customers were left without electricity when a fire seriously damaged a sub-station near the old Letterkenny Road,” confirmed the N.I.E. spokesperson.
“N.I.E. was able to restore power to 2850 homes very quickly and our engineers worked through the night to restore the power supply to the other 150.
“It’s vitally important that the public do not interfere with sub-stations. By engaging in such activity they are putting their own lives at risk.”
Quick response
Then, on Saturday night the PSNI and Fire fighters were again attacked as they attended a car fire at around 5pm on Lecky Road.
Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue condemned the attacks.
“These acts are carried out by mindless people and serve no purpose what so ever and could have led to serious injury to Fire Service personnel.
“It’s vital the message goes out that these attacks are totally wrong and will only have a detrimental effect on any area. And the great work that goes on in the community.”
