Exam review welcomed in Derry
A review of GCSE and A Level exams has been welcomed by Sinn Fein in Derry.
The north’s Education minister John O’Dowd announced the review yesterday. The review comes after UK Education Secretary Michael Gove scrapped GCSEs in England.
Mr O’Dowd has commissioned the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessments (CCEA) “to conduct a root and branch review of GCSE and A-level qualifications here.”
Derry Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue, the party’s education spokesperson in the city, says the review “will not only protect the value of examinations in the North of Ireland but will dovetail into the reform of the education system that is geared to increase academic excellence and allow all of our children to reach their full potential.”
“The unilateral announcement by British Education Minister Michael Gove that he was to abolish GCSE’s in England and change criteria of examinations across Scotland, Wales and the North of Ireland has caused uncertainty amongst teachers, pupils and parents to the current value of these exams.
“It is important that the value of qualification gained throughout our schooling system are maintained to a level where they are universally recognised in order for students to progress through secondary and third level education,” she says.
