‘Extra policing in Foyle needed’

Derry’s policing watchdog has called on the city’s PSNI chief to provide more resources to crack down on a spate of house burglaries across the district.

Councillor Thomas Conway, chairman of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), last night urged Chief Inspector Jon Burrows to review specific policing requirements in a bid to provide reassurance to local communities.

Colr. Conway said: “The Policing Committee of the Derry PCSP has asked the Foyle Area Commander to bid for additional policing resources for the area given the forthcoming City of Culture programme, associated events and the expected influx of visitors into the city and district in 2013.”

He added: “I am confident that the PSNI has taken these concerns on board and I hope that, in the coming months, we will see additional police resources on the ground in the city and district.”

Colr. Conway also voiced concern that community officers could be “extracted” to provide additional cover for the 2013 event programme.
