Family had lucky escape in petrol bomb attack

A Derry family had a narrow escape on Saturday night when their car was targeted by petrol bombers on the Lecky Road Flyover.

A petrol bomb was thrown at the car as a crowd of up around 30 young people gathered in the area burning furniture and throwing fireworks.

Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue condemned the disturbances and called for those engaging in anti-community activity to stop immediately.

“This family had a very lucky escape from serious injury,” she said. “They were travelling along the Lecky Road when a petrol bomb thrown from the direction of Durrow Park passed over the bonnet of their car smashing on the roadway. It doesn’t bear thinking about the consequences if this petrol bomb had hit the car,” she added.

Colr. Logue said there have been a number of incidents in the area in recent weeks.

“Furniture was dragged onto the road and set on fire, causing disruption around the Flyover.

“The previous weekend plastic fencing used for road works was set on fire in the vicinity.

“This is the last thing the people of the area want happening in their area at the weekends. It leaves an awful mess and creates problems for the emergency services, motorists travelling through the area, taxis and food delivery companies trying to earn a living in the middle of January,” she said.

The local colr. also said the misuse of fireworks can be frightening for residents.

“I have also received a number of complaints about the use of fireworks and bangers in the area over a five or six hour period on Saturday night.

“It can be very frightening to have fireworks going off outside your home,” she said.
