'Father Sean McKenna deserves our full support'

A Derry woman who lost her brother to cancer four years ago has said she fully supports Father Sean McKenna for following his heart, after he announced he was leaving the priesthood last weekend.

Alana Dorney from Creggan said her family will never forget the care that Father McKenna showed her brother during the last months of his life.

"He gave my family tremendous support," said Alana. "He is such a lovely man and I will never forget how good he was to us all. Father McKenna would come and visit often, he would sit with Ciaran and became his confidant. Even after Ciaran died, Father McKenna never broke that trust and never told us what he said.

"Father McKenna is a very special man. When you talk to him he has this ability to calm you and gives you a great sense of reassurance.

"I just want to express my support to Father McKenna and to say I admire him so much for following his heart and for displaying what an honest man he is. I think in this day and age priests should be allowed to share their love between their own family and God..

"Father McKenna has huge support from the people in Creggan who wish him the best. The majority of people support him and we all agree that it is a very sad state of affairs that Father McKenna cannot continue to be a priest. My only regret is that Father McKenna will not be able to do my wedding and baptise my children

"Father McKenna deserves our support after all the support and love he has showed our community. Now I think it's our turn to support him."
