The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed they will be returning to the Tower Block at Altnagelvin Hospital on Thursday evening in order to complete a fire safety drill.

What is described as a “Closed emergency training exercise at the Tower Block, Altnagelvin Hospital” will commence at 7pm.

A spokserson for the Service said: “The exercise does not relate to the recent fires in the hospital and was planned well in advance of these incidents occurring. The public should not be alarmed if they see this level of activity as this is a fully pre-planned training exercise and is one of many training exercises carried out by NIFRS at the hospital throughout the year.”

The purpose of this public safety enhancing exercise is to test the Fire Service operational procedures in high rise buildings.

A total of nine fire appliances and approximately 35 Fire Personnel will be involved.

“The public can be assured that emergency Fire & Rescue cover in the area will not be affected,” stressed the spokesperson, adding: “We thank the public in advance of this exercise for their co-operation, with disruption to the public being kept to a minimum.”
