Fireworks seized in Derry

Police in Derry have seized a quantity of rockets and fireworks during searches in the city.

The searches were carried out on Tuesday.

Inspector Trevor McKeown says it is vital parents, youth and community leaders help police make the Halloween period safe and fun.

“The weeks prior to and after Halloween are becoming an increasingly busy time of the year for Police,” he says.

“We continually receive reports of criminal damage, anti-social behaviour and the misuse of fireworks. We want to make it clear that we take Halloween seriously and anyone caught breaking the law will be dealt with robustly.

“I would ask parents to make sure they know the whereabouts of their children and to make sure that they are not engaging in any criminal activity or criminal damage to property.”

Meanwhile Sinn Fein councillor Lynn Fleming has condemned the misuse and distribution of illegal fireworks in the Waterside over recent weeks.

“A lot of positive work has been done in Derry over the last number of years to deal with the issue of selling illegal fireworks. And the availability of these dangerous items has been reduced

“Those making a profit from selling these items, with clearly a total disregard for the community, should cease immediately.
