Derry’s hotly anticipated City of Culture Sprint Triathlon has been ‘energised’ by new sponsor firmus energy.

The energy company has thrown its weight behind the event to make it even bigger than originally planned with more than 500 competitors now set take on the swim-bike-run challenge on June 23. The triathlon is the highlight in the calendar of organiser, the North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), and is part of a programme of activity-based festivities for young and old to celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary.

Michael Scott, general manager of firmus energy, said: “I know registrations are exceeding expectations and that our support will allow the competition to be opened up to even more entrants. firmus energy employees will be taking part in an active engagement programme throughout the county in the lead-up to the main event encouraging children across the City to get up and get moving.”

Paul McGilloway, Race Director at NWTC, added: “Thanks to the support from firmus energy, we will be able to open up this inaugural triathlon to greater numbers than we initially envisaged in addition to providing events suitable for all ages and abilities.”
