First ever Derry City programme goes under hammer

editorial image

Two rare football programmes - from Derry City’s first and second ever League games played at the Brandywell - are set to go under the hammer.

The programmes which date back to the late 1920’s are being auctioned by Sporting Memorys Worldwide Auctions and form part of a massive collection of soccer memorabilia up for grabs.

Auctioneers have placed an asking price of £400 - £600 on a Derry City v Glentoran programme which they describe as “a very rare programme from the clubs 1st game in the Irish League, this was also the first game played at Brandywell on 22/08/1929.“

Also set to go under the hammer with a £300-£400 estimate is a programme from the second match to be played at the Brandywell between Derry City and Ballymena.

The auction house has further items of local interest including two sports newspapers produced in Derry in 1929.

The time descriptions reads:” The first ever issue was issued on 18/09/1929 and included line ups for the Derry City v Glentoran, Gold Cup second round tie. The next issue, dated 09/11/1929 included the line-ups for the Derry City v Distillery match (both newspapers have faults). There are also 2 single pages, possibly programme inserts, both poems dedicated, to our Manager (Billy Gillespie), and Frank Harkin (City’s versatile half back), both pages dated ‘Derry 1932’. Estimate £100/£120.”
