FLAGS SAGA FLUTTERS ON
Should a proposal to create a designated space in Limavady to fly nationalist/republican flags on designated days get the go ahead, Tricolours and other republican flags will be removed ahead of a unionist parade in the town this weekend.
The ‘Journal’ understands the proposal will be brought before Limavady councillors tonight. It follows a lengthy meeting between nationalist and unionist councillors and the PSNI in the town on Friday to discuss the long running saga over flags.
Sinn Fein Colr. Sean McGlinchey said at the meeting unionists wanted all nationalist-republican flags, including the ‘Starry Plough’ and ‘Sun Burst’ flags removed ahead of the parade last Friday night, which saw part of the route along Irish Green Street. He hit out at unionists for the call because he said they remained unwilling to remove loyalist flags flying in parts of the town.
Colr. McGlinchey said the proposal scheduled for tonight’s Council meeting was setting an example to others, and not just in Limavady.
“It means all nationalist/republican flags would be taken down, before the weekend and, from here on in, flown only on designated days during the year,” he said.
“The proposal is for three flag poles in an area of the Glens, which means there will be no more need for flags to be flown on lamp posts.
“To be fair, it is setting a precedent and hopefully other areas will follow the example.”
Colr. McGlinchey said all parties must continue to engage in dialogue over the issue.
SDLP Colr. Michael Coyle said there was no outcome from Friday’s meeting and described it as a “non event”.
“The only positive to come out of the meeting is there may follow other meetings over flags and parades,” he said.
With regards to the proposal due before Council, Colr. Coyle said: “We will have to wait and see how positive it will be towards the future of flying of flags.”
