Fr Joseph Morris dies after illness
Father Joseph Morris, former parish priest of both Clonmany and Culdaff, has died aged 81.
The former St Columb’s College student, who retired in 2004 as parish priest of Culdaff, died peacefully on Sunday night in Carndonagh Community Hospital after a very short illness.
His remains will be brought to St Mary's Church, Bocan today for funeral Mass tomorrow at 12.00 noon with burial afterwards in Clonmany cemetery.
Hugo Boyce, a good friend of Fr Morris, said the honorary president of the Clonmany festival be sorely missed.
“The whole Clonmany community will be very sad to hear of his passing.
“The people of Clonmany will be very sad about this, he was a good friend to many people and still visited Clonmany every week, even though he was moved out to Culdaff. “
Fr Morris was born in Greencastle, Co Tyrone on December 23, 1928. After attending Greencastle Primary School, Omagh CBS and St Columb's College he studied for the priesthood for the Derry Diocese in St Patrick's College, Maynooth.
He was ordained by Bishop Farren on April 4, 1954.
Immediately after his Ordination he was appointed as curate in Termonamongan (Aghyaran) and served there for seven years.
In 1961 he was transferred to Carndonagh where he remained to 1964.
From Carndonagh he moved to Clonmany where he ministered as curate until 1988. He was appointed Parish Priest of Clonmany in 1988, an appointment he retained until 1996 when he was transferred as Parish Priest to Culdaff, where he remained until he retired in 2004.
Fr Morris spent his retirement in Culdaff.
