Girl critical after accident

An 18 year-old girl was critically injured in a serious road traffic incident in the Foyle Road area of Derry in the early hours of yesterday.

The ‘Sunday Journal’ understands that one car was involved and that the girl was a passenger in a taxi when the incident occurred at around 7a.m.

It is believed the girl, who was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital, fell from the taxi as it was moving.

At the time of going to print, the injured girl’s condition was described as ‘stable’ and there was a suggestion she might have to be transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Sinn Fein councillor, Mickey Cooper, visited the scene of the incident several times yesterday and said his thoughts were with the girl and her family at this “tough time”.

“It must be shocking for any family to wake up to news that their child has been hurt in an accident. It’s very sad for all of those affected by what happened.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the girl and her family at this tough time. I hope that the girl makes a speedy recovery,” said Colr. Cooper.

The Foyle Road was closed for several hours yesterday as police conducted their investigation into the incident but was re-opened at around 1.30p.m.
