Grants windfall for local groups
Five groups in the Derry area are sharing in a grants windfall from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme.
The small grants programme is awarding grants totalling more than £47,800 to the local groups as part of a grants roll-out of £658,459 to 84 groups across the North.
Awards for All offers community, voluntary and statutory groups the chance to apply for small grants of between £500 and £10,000 that will have a big impact on local communities and the lives of people most in need.
The Junction: Community Relations and Resource Centre, based at The Diamond, has been awarded £9,900 to hold music sessions that will bring community groups from different backgrounds across Derry together and encourage them to mix and share their views and opinions.
The ‘Chicken Soup and Songs for the Soul’ sessions will feature songs written and performed by well known musician Roy Arbuckle, accompanied by singer Anne Tracey, that have been created to inspire storytelling and reflection.
Meanwhile, the Fountain Dance Association, which is based in the Caw Centre in Nelson Drive, is receiving £9,100 to continue to run cross community dance classes and activities.
A grant of £9,435 has also been awarded to Galliagh Women’s Group. The group will use the funding to run a programme of education and skills training aimed at boosting the self esteem, personal development and wellbeing of women in the local area.
Also receiving grants in the Awards for All programme are the Creevagh Women’s Group, which will use a grant of £9,910 to provide a range of training programmes, and Newbuildings Youth Club which will use £9,490 to run a programme of activities for targeting teenagers who currently do not attend the club.
