Green power plant planned

Plans are underway to build a renewable energy power plant on the outskirts of Derry.

Proposals to build a15 MW dedicated biomass heat and power plant on a disused 5.5 acre site between Temple Road and Maydown Road at Lisahally have been lodged with the Planning Service.

The submission states that the virgin wood-fuelled plant would provide “an output of 15MW of electrical power to the National Grid”. It further states that the plant, which will be made up of several buildings and amounting to more than 6,200 square metres, will operate around the clock. The plans include a large timber storage facility and a fuel silo as the facility would use an estimated 160,000 tons per year of virgin biomass fuel in the form of logs and chips.
