Guardian prefers Derry to Londonderry

A former mayor of Derry has hit out at the Guardian newspaper after it produced a book on the correct use of the English language which advised use of the name Derry instead of Londonderry.

DUP Alderman Joe Millar said he was concerned at the advice contained in 'The Guardian Book of English Language' which came free with Saturday's newspaper, may have made a 'mistake'.

"This is a matter of concern and an issue that we have raised on numerous occasions in the past. It is something we have strong opinions on and I will certainly be bringing this to the attention of my party leader. The correct name of the city is Londonderry so it could be a mistake on their part," he said.
