High Court told:Belfast man fears Derry prisoners
A cousin of murdered traveller John Mongan says he fears for his safety while being held in jail alongside two Derry men accused of the killing.
Brian Mongan's lawyer told the High Court in Belfast yesterday that his client's concerns were over being remanded at Maghaberry Prison alongside the two men.
The court also heard of his relationship to John Mongan (30), who was attacked and killed in front of his wife at their Fallswater Street home in west Belfast on February 7.
Christopher Stokes (32), of Glengalliagh Park and Edward Stokes (36), of Cornshell Fields, both in Derry, have been remanded in custody accused of the murder. A 15-year-old youth from the city has also been charged.
Referring to the murder case, Mr Taylor said Brian Mongan had raised concerns about his continued detention.
The lawyer said: "He instructs me that he's in fear of members of the Stokes family while he's in Maghaberry."
The bail application was also told that 34-year-old Mongan, who faces a number of motoring charges, planned to commit suicide by crashing a car into a wall near Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.
Defence counsel Patrick Taylor said his client later had a change of heart about trying to take his own life.
Mongan, of Fallswater Street, Belfast, is charged with driving while disqualified, having no insurance, and drink driving.
The court also heard that Mongan had been receiving treatment for mental health issues.
Refusing to grant bail, Mr Justice Hart said there was a risk of re-offending if Mongan was released.
