Northland Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Cooper has welcomed maintenance work at Killea cemetery.

Colr. Cooper had previously called for the cemetery, which is owned by Derry City Council, to be maintained as it had become overgrown.

The cemetery, on the outskirts of Killea, on the Derry side of the border, is one of a number of old graveyards owned by Derry City Council.

Unlike other old graveyards at Enagh Lough and Straidarran, Killea cemetery is still occasionally used for burials.

Colr. Cooper said the maintenance work will be welcomed by locals and relatives of those buried there.

“I have lobbied the Cemeteries Department at Derry City Council for over a year to get this work completed. The entrance to the cemetery, which is owned by Derry City Council and still used as a place of burial, was in a very unkempt condition and had been for many years,” he said.

Colr. Cooper said the upgrade work will also make it easier for members of the public to access the cemetery.

“The work has enhanced the entrance and also means the gates in the cemetery can now be opened fully for the first time in many years.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the council staff involved and I am sure the maintenance there will now continue into the future,” he said.
