Holy Family Primary School pupil Nathan Murphy was the toast of the entire school this week as he celebrated picking up a prestigious ‘Child of Courage’ award.

Nathan, from Culmore Point, was one of 60 children who made it through thousands of entries to be given a special certificate by the William Keown Trust who highlight the achievements and promote the dignity of people with disabilities.

Nathan has cerebral palsy and spends a lot of time in his wheelchair but according to staff at the Ballymagroarty school, the eleven year-old lets nothing stand in his way and is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the indoor football league.

Nathan said he was surprised to be nominated for the award and says he always tries to give his full energy with everything he does.

“You just have to try your best and push yourself,” he says.

Class teacher, Ann Higgins, who nominated Nathan says he is an inspiration to everyone in the school.

“We are delighted that Nathan has been recognised by this award and it’s gone to a pupil who brightens up the day for so many by his enthusiasm, humour and smile. It’s a truly well deserved achievement.”

Holy Family principal Garry Matthewson added: “Nathan does not let his disability restrict his participation in school life. He engages with enthusiasm in all aspects of the curriculum and due to the accessibility of the building he’s able to travel independently throughout the school.”

See this Sunday’s Journal for more on Nathan’s journey and challenges as a Child of Courage.
