Hunger strike events this weekend
Dungiven will host the national hunger strike commemoration with a series of events held in the town this weekend.
Republicans from across Ireland are expected to gather in the county Derry town for the weekend of commemoration, which will culminate in a large march on Sunday.
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson encouraged as many local people as possible to attend the commemorations in Dungiven.
“The march to commemorate the 31st Anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike will take place in Dungiven this coming Sunday (August 5th) at 2pm.
“The assembly point is Owenbeg Cottages on the main road to Derry. There will also be a full programme of events taking place over that weekend.
“The prison struggle of the late 1970s and early 1980s were without any doubt a key moment in the Irish struggle for freedom and justice. Within that period the Hunger Strike of 1981 is of course the defining moment.
“Sunday’s National commemoration in Dungiven is one of the biggest events on the Republican calendar and I appeal to the wider Republican community, to the people of Ireland and international sympathisers to mobilise and show support for the ideals for which the Hunger Strikers gave their all,” she said.
The weekend of events will get underway on Friday with the national hunger strike exhibition which will be on display in the Sinn Féin centre, Main Street, Dungiven, from 10am to 8pm.
The exhibition will be on display at the centre throughout the weekend.
It will be followed by a discussion on the role of women in 1980 and 1981 which will be held at St Canice’s GAA Club, Dungiven at 8pm.
On Saturday a new mural hunger strike mural, painted by Derry man Paddy Nelis, will be unveilled at the Arcade Bar, Main Street, at 1pm. A function with music from ‘Rebel Hearts’ take place in O’Briens GAC clubhouse, Foreglen, from 9pm on Saturday.
The national hunger strike march will assemble at Owenbeg Cottages at 2pm on Sunday.
