Inishowen Editorial: Get out and vote

Not another one' may be the repeated exclamations of householders the length and breadth of the county in recent weeks as the teams of election candidates continue on the campaign trail.

But the very fact that there is "another one" underlines that democracy is alive and well and that where elections are concerned we can lead the field in terms of participation and interest.

A total of 65 candidates are putting their names forward in the Donegal County Council elections.

Add the names of those involved in Town Councils and the European Elections and you have a bumper squad from which to choose.

The question is, will you, as a member of the electorate, opt to choose?

Or, will you, come Friday, decide that none of them are worth voting for or alternatively that you just couldn't be bothered and consequently stay away from your local polling booth?

By the weekend, most of the candidates themselves will know their fate.

But irrespective who gets elected we need to have people of integrity in office, people who are looking out for the community not themselves. Councillors have been the butt of many criticisms but they do, by and large, a good job for very little money and a lot of hassle.

So they deserve our support. And the clear message is: Get out and vote.
