Inishowen TD meets Che Guevara’s daughter
Donegal Sinn Féin TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn met with the daughter of the legendary Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara in the Dáil last week.
Dr Aleida Guevara is the daughter of Guevara and his second wife Aleida March, and was visiting Ireland from 26 September to 2 October, stopping off in different parts of the country along the way.
Dr Guevara is a paediatrician at the William Soler Paediatric Hospital in Havana, and during her trip here will promote the English version of a new book “Remembering Che: My Life with Che Guevara”, which was written by her mother.
Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:“It was a great honour to meet Dr Guevara. Her father is one of my personal heroes and she continues his great legacy in her own right today. She has worked as a physician and pediatrician not just in Cuba but also in Angola, Ecuador, and Nicaragua and she has been an advocate for human rights and debt relief for developing nations.
“She was interviewed about the philosophy behind universal health care in Michael Moore’s film Sicko.
Someday, I hope that the Irish people and so many others can have a health system as accessible and affordable as the Cuban system”
“At the end of the day it is all about choices and priorities. The current debacle following the resignation of Junior Health Minister, Roisin Shortall reminds us of how we have got it so badly wrong to date in Ireland”
