Interface worker offers to meet young rioters
A leading Derry community worker who patrolled the Fountain/Bishop Street interface for six years has offered to meet with young people involved in recent clashes at the flashpoint.
Charlie McMenamin was until recently part of a rota of community workers which patrolled the interface on a nightly basis. The rota was stopped last week after attacks on several of the community activists involved - including Mr McMenamin.
Speaking at a protest held in the Bogside at the weekend, Mr McMenamin said he would not be deterred from his community work and called on the young people involved in the disturbances to work with him.
"I have helped a lot of young people who have been involved in these type of attacks at the interface in the past and they have moved on. I want some of those young people who have come through this and moved on and realised what they were doing was wrong to come out now and say to the other young people who are causing problems on the interface now that they should not be doing this.
"I also want the young people involved to sit down with me and talk about what they are doing so we can find a way to stop it and let people live in peace," he said.
Danielle Doherty, from the Triax neighbourhood management team, also called on young people to held find a resolution to the ongoing clashes at the flashpoint.
"We are appealing for the young people in the area to show some leadership for other young people who may be involved in this. We may have all made mistakes but changes need to be made," she said.
