The pilot of a microlight aircraft had a miraculous escape yesterday when he crashed in a field outside Convoy while trying to land in a nearby airfield.
The man, in his early thirties, believed to be from Buncrana, was the only occupant of the two-seater aircraft which crashed at Carrickbrack, Convoy at 1.35pm yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the pilot was airlifted by the Sligo coastguard helicopter to Letterkenny General Hospital. The man suffered serious injuries in the accident which left him in a critical condition. Last night his condition was not thought to be life-threatening.
One source said the pilot was very lucky to escape with his life.
The scene of the accident was still preserved last night after investigators from the Air Accident Investigation Unit arrived. The aircraft was attempting to land at Kilpatrick airfield when it came down and it is thought strong winds may have played a factor. A garda spokesman said last night that there are witnesses to the accident. The aircraft was severely damaged in the impact and wreckage was strewn over a wide area.
