Inward investors bypass Limavady

In the financial year 2011-2012 not a single visit by a potential inward investor to Limavady was facilitated by Invest NI, according to a local MLA.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment Arlene Foster revealed the information in response written question by East Derry SDLP Assembly Member John Dallat earlier this month.

“The Minister points out that Invest NI does not determine the location of an inward investment project and goes on to say this is taken by the investor. In other words other than bringing investors to Northern Ireland there is no role for either her department or Investment NI,” said the assemblyman.

“This is not good enough and begs the question: ‘What is her role and that of Invest NI in relation to Limavady and other areas of high unemployment? What is she and her department doing for East Derry?

“The Minister needs to explain what activity has been engaged in to address an area of chronic unemployment, mass emigration and a lack of confidence in the ability of the Executive to bring jobs to Limavady.”

Mr. Dallat claimed the minister “has consistently refused to set up a special economic task force at assembly level to identify what needs to be done to exploit the strengths and opportunities which exist even in the state of depression we find ourselves. She needs to acknowledge that jobs disappeared in their thousands from Seagate, the building industry, textiles, business and agriculture,” said Mr. Dallat. “On the back of her most recent written answer to my question I am calling on her to reconsider my demand for a special task force and I hope my call gathers the support of all parties and organisations involved in job creation. It simply isn’t good enough to deal with the jobs crisis at a Northern Ireland level and ignore the special circumstances that East Derry finds itself in.”
