The Republican Graves Association will hold its annual volunteers commemoration this weekend.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the deaths of IRA members Edward McSheffrey and Paddy Deery who died in an explosion in the Creggan area of the city on October 28, 1987.

Mickey Kinsella, spokesperson for the Derry Graves Association, said: “I appeal to everyone to turn out for the annual volunteers commemoration and recommit themselves to playing their part, however small, in delivering the republic that our patriot dead fought for.”

The Derry Volunteers Commemoration is held each year to remember all those local people who died as a result of the conflict. It is seen as a very important date in the local republican calendar in both Derry and Donegal.

The main speaker at Sunday’s commemoration will be new MEP Martina Anderson.

People are asked to assemble at the Creggan shops at 2.30pm before proceeding to the City Cemetery.

Later in the evening, the annual Graves Association prize draw will take place in the Gasyard at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
