Irish soccer star McClean returns to Twitter

Derry soccer ace James McClean has returned to Twitter only weeks after sectarian abuse forced him to quit the social networking site.

McClean, currently with the Irish squad at the Euro 2012 Championships in Poland, tweeted for the first time since May 8 yesterday.

He wrote:”gona give this another go, gona be a good boy this time ha italy game the nyt hopin to sign of with a win! fans have been immense.”

The Sunderland star shut down his Twitter account in May after being subjected to a torrent of sectarian abuse on the site after being selected in Ireland’s Euro 2012 squad.

McClean received a horde of congratulatory messages but some were more sinister.

One Twitter user, with the account ‘RobbieLittle@PotKettleBlack3’, posted: “F*** up your dirty fenian b****** il make sure you get shot when you set foot back into gods country #FTP.”

Another using the name ‘James W Magee@JamesWMagee07’ posted: “U deserve to be shot for that comment!! Your playing for Ireland and not the country you were born in (NI). #p****”

Those messages have since been deleted.

McClean has been the subject of abuse before on Twitter after deciding to represent the Republic rather than Northern Ireland.
