‘It could have been tragic’ - priest speaks after teens injured in crash

There is a huge sense of relief in Foreglen today after three teens survived what has been described as an “horrific” crash at the weekend.

The Altagarron Road was closed off for some time after the collision on Friday evening, which was believed to have involved two quads.

Three male teens were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries, which police said were not life threatening.

One of the teens was airlifted by the police helicopter.

Last night, Sinn Fein councillor Tony McCaul said: “It sounds like it was an horrific incident, with horrific injuries, and there had been talk of loss of a limb and an eye to one of the teens.

“That evening, people actually thought they would have three funerals on their hands, so everyone was very relieved that was not the case.

“I believe they had their helmets on and that saved them.”

Colr. McCaul says he has spoken with loved ones of two of the teens.

“They’re coping alright.

“I think they are just so relieved that no one is dead,” said Colr. McCaul, adding he understood one of the teens remains in hospital.

Rev Arthur P O’Reilly CC praised rescue and emergency services at the scene for their amazing work, and also the hospital staff.

“The surgeons and hospital staff did a marvellous job and managed to save the leg of one of the young chaps. ]

“It was an unfortunate accident and everyone was so concerned. They’re three great young chaps, lively and enthusiastic, and the whole community has prayed they will have a speedy recovery. We are thankful it wasn’t worse. It could have been tragic,” said Fr. O’Reilly.

Colr. McCaul said the incident is a timely reminder to parents about their children and quad use, adding: “It’s also a reminder how precious life is.”

Police want anyone with information about the incident to contact Limavady Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
