It's Walk to School Week
Thousands of children across the city are walking to school this week as part of a special campaign to get them fit and ease road congestion.
The schools initiative, called ‘WOW!’ (Walk Once a Week), will see youngsters walking to school together instead of being dropped off in the car.
More than 44,000 primary and post primary pupils from schools across the North will be taking part in the annual Walk to School Week from May 19 - 23.
Speaking at the launch, Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy, said: “At peak morning rush hour approximately 20 per cent of cars are on the school run, significantly adding to congestion on our local roads and many of these car journeys are within reasonable walking distance. With many schools being located in or near residential areas this also has a knock on effect on congestion affecting local communities.”
The WOW! initiative, which was developed by Travelwise NI, uses colourful posters, interactive daily charts and certificates to get pupils actively involved in walking and cycling to ease problems caused by the ‘school run.’
