Ivan Cooper in hospital after falls
Ivan Cooper, a leading light in the civil rights movement, is recovering in hospital following two serious falls this week.
Among those wishing Mr. Cooper a speedy recovery was Foyle MP Mr Durkan who said: “I regret that Ivan has suffered these terrible and unfortunate accidents this week.
“We hope he will be getting the best of care and that he has a full and speedy recovery.”
Mr. Cooper, who recently attended public events commemorating the 40th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, was one of the major figures of the 1960s civil rights movement and a founder member of the nationalist SDLP - a political stance that led many of his own Protestant community to brand him a traitor.
At the height of his political activity, he had the largest support of any nationalist MP elected to Stormont before the introduction of Direct Rule.
