Journal backs Vote for Both campaign

The Derry Journal is giving its support to the ‘Vote for Both’ campaign to help two local groups in the final of the National Lottery’s Good Causes Awards.
Only two groups from the North have reached the final and both are from Derry; the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum and Achieving Something Special.
The groups made it into the final through overwhelming public support at the semifinal stage and they have now joined forces and appealed to the public to get behind them once again to maximise Derry’s chances of winning an award.
Despite competing in different categories, best health project and best arts project respectively, the groups have agreed to campaign together to get the highest number of votes possible.
Both projects have agreed a joint strategy and, with the support of Derry City Council, will work together right up to the close of public voting on October 28th.
The Mayor of Derry, councillor Kevin Campbell launched the Vote for Both campaign recently to show civic support for both groups.
Appealing for the Derry public to get behind the campaign, Tony Doherty, general manager of the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum, said: “We are proud of how we are changing lives with National Lottery funding including a new project we will soon launch designed to improve the health of older people at risk of social isolation and ill-health.
“I would like the thousands of people from around Derry who voted for the Health Forum and for Achieving Something Special to do so again.”
Eglinton-based Achieving Something Special have used National Lottery funding to provide create space for adults with learning difficulties to work and showcase their creative arts talents.
Denise White of Achieving Something Special thanked the people who have already supported them and encouraged others to do the same. “It means so much to everyone involved in the project to get national recognition for our work. We’re really grateful to our friends and supporters who have taken the time to vote for us.
“It is really important that all those who voted for us in the last round cast their votes this time as well for us and for the Health Forum.”
The organisers of the campaign are asking people to vote for each project separately and to encourage their friends, families and colleagues to vote also. They have stressed that the two projects are not in competition with each other as they are in separate categories.
