‘Let’s work together’ says police chief

In this article District Commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin says there are people out of step with the wishes of the

people of the Derry who wish to move forward and its time for everyone to work together to promote what the city has to offer.

So far 2012 has shown that life in this city is both challenging and rewarding.

On the one hand we have seen how spirit, passion and hard work can help us achieve something great that will benefit the whole community.

As someone who has developed a real affinity for this city and its people, I was honoured to be able to offer my personal support, and the support of the PSNI, by travelling to Dublin to assist the Derry bid for the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

The Fleadh and the many other events in 2013 offer opportunity, regeneration, a much needed economic boost and, above all, an increasing sense of normality and hope for everyone who lives and works in this city.

There is no better example than the opening of Ebrington Square on Tuesday night where I saw several thousand people get their first glance of this fabulous facility.

I watched as families, friends and neighbours came together to enjoy this new space and I listened intently to the speeches that focused on moving forward together as a community.

Unfortunately we still see a small minority, who are out of step with your wishes and who have no regard for the cultural and economic future of our city.

They are not interested in promoting a positive image or attracting jobs and tourism.

Their actions are entirely selfish and futile.

If they have political aspirations to advance they should do so lawfully and peacefully.

It is incumbent on us all to oppose those who seek to drag us back and work positively together as a city and as a community to seize the opportunities that come our way.

Your police officers have given a commitment to support not only the Fleadh but the many other events that will come our way during the 2013 culture year and beyond.

Let’s all work together in promoting what Derry and its people have to offer in terms of culture, positivity and hope for a more peaceful and prosperous future.
