Limavady Mayor lashes out at councillors

Limavady Mayor, Sean McGlinchey has lashed out at councillors in the borough, who he accused of turning the Council Chamber into “a disgrace”.

During debate at a council meeting last Tuesday, about funding for Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in the borough, SDLP Colr. Gerry Mullan said members should be reaching out to the unionist community, and work towards a shared space and not be begrudging.

Reacting angrily, Sinn Fein councillor Mc Glinchey hit back.

“Let’s make it clear. We have reached out to the community, to groups, such as the British legion,” he said referring to the Legion’s decline of his invitation for a mayoral recption, “and others who haven’t even responded. I’m sitting here looking at Colr. Boyd Douglas with his (Union) flag. This chamber is a disgrace to the ratepayers. Councillors in here are busting to get out of here and not speak to each other.”

Mayor McGlinchey said his first six months as a councillor had been very disappointing and claimed Sinn Fein had “held out their hands” to other councillors but “some won’t even speak to us.” He said there was a lot of talk about helping business in the community, but said councillors must show leadership.

“Get off your asses and do something!” he said.
