Loyalist flag parade re-routed
The route of a controversial loyalist march through the Waterside on Sunday has been changed after plans for it to finish in Ebrington Square were criticised.
The demonstration, part of the ongoing series of protests over the Union flag dispute, had been originally planned to go from Bonds Street to Ebrington Square.
The organisers applied to the Parades Commission for permission but the application was later withdrawn and a further application submitted for an alternative route which will take it from Bonds Street to Irish Street, finishing at the old Waterside health centre.
A spokesperson for the Parades Commission said the new application was not deemed to be contentious and the march will be allowed to go ahead.
The move has been welcomed by Foyle SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey. “I want to welcome the mature decision to re-route this parade away from Ebrington Square in particular, especially given its hard-won status as a shared space. As we all know the Bloody Sunday march is also being held on that date, and my colleagues and I have been working behind the scenes to calm tensions and to seek clarity on the intentions of the parade,” he said. The new route of the parade is; Bonds Street, Glendemott Road, Dennett Gardens, Bann Drive, Finn Gardens, Mourne Drive, Dennett Gardens, Glendemott Road, Old Waterside Health Centre.
