Three pupils from Lumen Christi College in Derry were among the successful applicants who received offers to study from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge this year. Kevin McCarthy, Roma McCluskey and Conor Kiely have all received offers for either Oxford or Cambridge University, beginning in October 2012.
Kevin, who has been given an offer to study Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, said that he was thrilled when he received news that he had been accepted. “I felt very pleased when I was given the offer having witnessed the talent of many other applicants during the interviews. The standard is so high so I’m really pleased that I was accepted.”
Roma McCluskey, who is to study medicine at Downing College, Cambridge, said that she too was delighted with the offer. “I was really delighted when the letter came telling me I had received an offer. Cambridge is a fantastic place to study and I can’t wait to begin in October.”
Conor Kiely, who received an offer from St. Edmund Hall at Oxford University, to read English, admitted that he felt very lucky to have been offered a place. “I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to study at Oxford. I felt very privileged to be invited for an interview with so many brilliant and dedicated applicants. To receive an offer is an even bigger privilege and it is an experience that I’ll want to make the most of.”
The pupils all expressed their gratitude for the assistance and support they received from the teachers during the application process as well as for all the help and teaching they were given throughout their time at the college.
The college’s principal, Mr Patrick O Doherty, said the pupils’ success was “a wonderful achievement and fully deserved. Kevin, Roma and Conor can be justly proud of themselves – the college certainly is.”
