Machine pistol found by worker in Dungiven
A Limavady Borough Council worker got more than he bargained for when he was working at a picnic area outside Dungiven on Tuesday.
The worker was part of a crew clearing an overgrown embankment beneath the scenic Cashel picnic area, just outside Dungiven, off the Glenshane.
At around 10am, the worker spied what he thought was a plastic bottle in the undergrowth, but was shocked when he saw it was a black coloured gun.
The worker immediately called police, and subsequently, ATO were brought to the scene to examine the weapon. It is understood it was a machine pistol, and a magazine was also found.
Police and ATO were on scene until late afternoon, before taking the gun away for tests to establish more information.
A police spokesperson said: “It appears the item may have been lying there for some time. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Dungiven Sinn Fein councillor, Sean McGlinchey said he understood the gun had been there for some years.
He added: “Hopefully that’s the last of the decommissioning of weapons in Dungiven.”
