Man charged with terrorism offences

A 39 year-old man has been charged with terrorism offences linked to the murder of Catholic R.U.C. Constable Michael Ferguson, who was killed in Shipquay Street in January 1993.
The man, who has also been charged with three other offences relating to terrorism, will appear at Derry Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday) morning. As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
Constable Ferguson, who was 21 years-old when he was murdered, was shot by an IRA gunman as he stood outside a city centre shopping centre.
The shooting took place shortly after 2.20p.m. on Saturday January 23, 1993 as Constable Ferguson stood on guard duty outside the Richmond Centre while his colleagues questioned a suspected shoplifter.
The police constable was outside the shopping centre with an unarmed police woman when his killer struck.
An ambulance arrived and took the injured constable to Altnagelvin Hospital but he died shortly after admission.
Constable Ferguson, who was a Catholic police officer, was on his first tour of duty since joining the R.U.C. in May 1991.
He was the seventh person to be killed during the Troubles that year and was the first member of the security forces to die in Derry since five soldiers and a civilian were killed in an I.R.A. bomb attack on the Coshquin border checkpoint in October 1990.
Constable Ferguson’s funeral took place in the Sacred Heart Church, Omagh.
