A man has been shot in a “punishment style“ attack in Derry.

Police say the 29 year-old man was shot in the Meenan Square area of the Bogside at around 8.30pm last night (Feb. 5).

Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue condemned the shooting.

“The people who carried out this attack need to explain to the local community the rationale for their actions. Just last week we had a works van burned out in the same area.

“We are in a new era, we are creating a new society for the younger generation and there can be no place for this type of activity in Derry,” she said.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 500 111.
