Mayor demands apology after house raid

The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Kevin Campbell, has demanded an apology from the PSNI after his home was raided overnight and a number of items seized.

Colr. Campbell’s home in Creggan was raided by police during what the PSNI have described as a “major search operation” carried out in the area against vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD).

Officers arrived at the mayor’s home at 10.30pm on Thursday and told him they believed there was someone in the house they were looking for. Colr. Cambpell said he told the police he was alone in the house.

The police later entered the house at 4.30am and carried out a search operation for more than an hour before seizing a number of items, including a Derry City Council laptop and a mobile phone belonging to the mayor’s ten year-old daughter.

Colr. Campbell said he wants to know who ordered the search of his home.

“I want answers,” he said. “Someone made a decision to raid my home and I want to know who made that decision and on what grounds.

“They took a laptop belonging to Derry City Council, a laptop belonging to my daughter, two mobile phones which are obsolete, and a phone belonging to my daughter and a handheld camera.

“I want an explanation and an apology. Our party will be raising this at the highest level and we will be demanding answers,” he said.

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney said the incident was an example of “bad policing.”

“What happened in Kevin Campbell’s home was wrong. It was an example of bad leadership and bad communication and in essence bad policing.”

Mr McCartney also said Sinn Féin will be raising the matter with senior PSNI officers in Derry and with Chief Constable Matt Baggot.
