The mayor of Derry, councillor Kevin Campbell, will travel to Chicago to attend a prestigious festival which will focus on the City of Culture celebrations.

The First Citizen will attend the iBAM! festival in the United States from October 12th-14th.

The decision to go to the festival was taken at the monthly meeting of Derry City Council held in the Council offices, Strand Road, on Tuesday.

The theme of the festival will be ‘a journey towards understanding through the arts.’ Part of the focus of this year’s festival will be on Derry’s role as City of Culture om 2013.

More than 100 Irish authors, artists and musicians will perform during the festival.

As well as the mayor, other prominent Derry people will also attend a gala dinner during the iBAM! events. Children in Crossfire founder Richard Moore, actor Stephen Rea, and musician Phil Coulter will all receive awards at the gala dinner.

The mayor’s air travel and hotel accommodation costs for attending the event will be met by the iBAM! organisers.

All councillors were in agreement about the decision to attend the meeting, however SDLP colr. Shaun Gallagher requested that an officer be permitted to attend also.

The SDLP colr. said it should be common practise that an officer accompanies a mayor on overseas trips.

DUP alderman Joe Miller echoed colr. Gallagher’s comments.
