McClean at centre of Facebook row
Sunderland winger and former Derry City player James McClean has found himself at the centre of yet another social media row this week - this time venting his spleen a little closer to home.
The 23 year-old was forced to apologise to Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni after tweeting about his disappointment at being left on the bench during the Republic’s match with Kazakhstan last Friday night.
And on Tuesday this week he took issue with a tongue-in-cheek post on satirical news site Pure Derry based on rumours he was to buy the Bogside Inn - directing a number of very pointed comments at the site and its users, laced at times with colourful language.
That was the signal for a storm of comments on the site, many of them suggesting he was over-reacting to a bit of fun.
The man behind Pure Derry - who has asked that we keep his identity a secret - commented on the row saying: “The basis of the joke was to address the subject of ‘Derry Rumours’ and also make light of local rivalry between Creggan and the Bogside.
“It was harmless, good-natured and just intended to be a bit of fun, especially as we considered the rumours to be absurd.”
He said he was “astonished” when McClean began posting on the page and was shocked that the star winger thought the site was attacking him.
“We’ve written tongue-in-cheek articles involving most high-profile Derry people in the past decade, including several of James’ old team mates at Derry City FC.
“Never in all that time have we had cause for complaint. Everyone has taken it in the nature it was intended - a bit of fun. No matter how biting our satire, PureDerry is not written with vicious intentions.
“We see this as inexperience on James’ part in learning to deal with public commentary. James is an ambassador for Derry, and we will continue to support his push for a regular international place (as we have done publicly).
“As this week shows however, as a young role model, he should have someone advising him on how to use social media correctly. If he scores against Liverpool this weekend, I’ll even do it myself,” the Pure Derry hack said.
